Clifton Park native Bob Cain recently returned to Saratoga National Golf Club as head teaching professional with an emphasis on developing programs for young golfers.
With the season just under way, Cain has about 40 kids enrolled in the Saratoga National Golf Academy’s junior programs, which include instruction, team play and tournament competition.
“We have options for kids ages 6 through 18,” said Cain. “We start by teaching them the fundamentals with an emphasis on fun. When ready, students can move on to more advanced skills development and even train to compete.”
After graduating from the College of Saint Rose where he excelled as a member of the golf team, Cain worked at Saratoga National from 2003 through 2007. He then moved on to Westchester Country Club where he spent eight years working with kids and developing his teaching and coaching skills. “Westchester is a world-renowned golf destination,” said Cain. “It gave me an opportunity to learn from some of the best professionals anywhere.”
Cain holds various certifications from the Professional Golfers Association and U.S. Kids Golf. In addition to overseeing the junior golf program at Saratoga National, he provides instruction for adults and does club fitting.
“Golf is a game you can enjoy for the rest of your life. It also teaches kids sportsmanship and values that last a lifetime,” said Cain. “To be a part of that, and to watch them develop as athletes and as people, is something I find very gratifying.”
Cain coaches Saratoga National’s Junior League co-ed golf team. Boys and girls ages 7-13 play teams representing other facilities from around the region in a low-stress, scramble format. “The kids wear jerseys, get some on-course experience and have fun in a family-friendly environment,” said Cain.
